Frequently Asked Questions

How do we do what we do, and other common questions...

How does VEO coaching work?

Through a unique programme developed over a decade, and usually embracing a seven-pointed plan covering different 'aspects of the voice'. It includes an expert analysis (using an adaptation of Christina Shewell's Voice Skills Framework) and self-diagnosis. Conditioned responses are identified and removed, and sound physiological tools applied.

All courses are tailored specifically to the client's individual requirements. However, making strange noises, working with words and the body is critical to success! Naturally, the breath and vocal instrument are at the heart of all our products. Frankly, its best explained by doing.

Why do you insist on two sessions?

Because two sessions with a break in between was proven by Dr Frances MacCurtain through rigorous research to increase sustainability. VEO is a one-off life skill. It is the antithesis of knowledge based learning. After the first session habits need to drop away and new habits acquired at home before being applied at work.

What if I need help right now?

We can do no better than quote a wonderful voice coach, writer and teacher called Caroline Cornish... "If I was only permitted to give six words of advice, they would be these "Stand up. Breathe In, Speak Out." From 'Can You Hear Me at The Back?' published by BiVocal Press 1995, ISBN 0 952645807. We would also add, "Be well lubricated too... with water!"

Why don't you recommend imposing VEO courses?

If someone's not open to improving their vocal style they'd be wasting their company's investment in them by taking a course.

How do we know we'll get our money's worth?

You'll never know for sure until you've tried us! We've only had satisfied clients to-date. Read our client testimonials

Why don't you coach more than 4 people at a time?

Because it isn't time efficient and it would dilute the quality.

Do you change accents?

No. Accents are a unique part of the individual's personality. However, we can ensure a strong accent isn't a distraction.

Are there any health risks?

Quite the reverse! The entire emphasis is on effortless communicating. However, we always check for relevant medical conditions before coaching. Should there be any indication of a problem we would advise you to seek professional medical advice.

I use my voice a lot, any tips on care?

Lots! Come on a course or book a Vocal Health talk! If you're solely interested in voice care, visit www.voicecare.org.uk or www.british-voice-association.com

Can you help write stuff?

Yes and No... Alan Jones's 'Mind Optimization' courses specifically look at structuring a presenting. Advice on the core framework and key fundraising presentation messages is included in the options for quoted or floating companies. We can also refer you to a superb copywriter.

What if we need to be really discreet?

We're used to it. All coaching is treated as strictly confidential. Naturally, we're happy to sign whatever non-disclosure or confidentiality agreements you require. One-to-one consultations are treated as personal and private. No data is kept either electronically or in paper format after the 3 month sustainability check.

Am I going to have to learn a whole load of strategies or techniques?

No. This is more about unlearning! Although you'll gain more with practice, our coaching is based on naturally acquiring new physiological responses and ditching counter-productive ones.

Do you cover body language?

Yes and no. Yes, bodily distractions and tensions are removed. No, we don't teach or recommend adopting particular poses - if you're thinking about whether to fold your arms or not you'd no longer be 'simply communicating'.

Do you discounts if our whole company/team want coaching?

No. We 'DDD' - 'don't do discounts' and 'don't do drekkly' (the Cornish word for sometime). However, we will consider providing an introductory VEO course for a decision maker and one other for £800 plus travel and accommodation if there is interest in running VEO through a company. For every course. a day is spent in preparation - that makes us very competitive.

Isn't using Wando Lady an indulgence?

It depends. If you overindulge in the free booze and leave those mobiles switched on so you're not focusing on the job in hand then it may well be. But if you take it as a unique working holiday you should come away with a week's work completed in two days, and be refreshed and having acquired skills that will give you a healthy return on the fees expended.

What if I have to cancel at short notice?

See our small print page - we believe we're very generous with our terms. All we ask is that you return the favour when it comes to paying us promptly.
